Summary

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“Wildly entertaining。”—The New York Times

“Ingenious。”—The Washington Post

Grady Hendrix takes on the haunted house in a thrilling new novel that explores the way your past—and your family—can haunt you like nothing else。

When Louise finds out her parents have died, she dreads going home。 She doesn’t want to leave her daughter with her ex and fly to Charleston。 She doesn’t want to deal with her family home, stuffed to the rafters with the remnants of her father’s academic career and her mother’s lifelong obsession with puppets and dolls。 She doesn’t want to learn how to live without the two people who knew and loved her best in the world。

Most of all, she doesn’t want to deal with her brother, Mark, who never left their hometown, gets fired from one job after another, and resents her success。 Unfortunately, she’ll need his help to get the house ready for sale because it’ll take more than some new paint on the walls and clearing out a lifetime of memories to get this place on the market。

But some houses don’t want to be sold, and their home has other plans for both of them…

Like his novels The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires and The Final Girl Support GroupHow to Sell a Haunted House is classic Hendrix: equal parts heartfelt and terrifying—a gripping new read from “the horror master” (USA Today)。

I give it 3。5 stars。 I enjoyed his writing style and the cover instantly drew me to the book but it didn’t scare me or hook me in the way I was hoping

I apologize to Mark for previously wanting him dead

This is a new favorite。 It is so much about grieving the death of a loved one, having to go through their things, which is very pertinent to my life the last six months。 This was fun and funny and so beautiful at parts

3 and a Half stars。Ok。 Do I Love Grady Hendrix books? Absolutely。 It's one of my "Automatic Buys"。 Did I like this book? Ehhh。 I wanted to love it more then I did。 I have been waiting for this one for months。 The story was really fun。 Typical Grady style。 I don't really know what I didn't like about it。 Just wasn't really into it。 I didn't Vibe with the characters or what they were going through。 I was bored。 The story didn't come alive to me。 It was just alright。 As always, I'm not counting Gra 3 and a Half stars。Ok。 Do I Love Grady Hendrix books?

Anne

not this book making me cry over a haunted puppet

Masterfully written - addressing issues of this world and 'beyond'。 The human element of it all was captivating and it had so many unexpected turns throughout, I really never knew where it was going。 Masterfully written - addressing issues of this world and 'beyond'。 The human element of it all was captivating and it had so many unexpected turns throughout, I really never knew where it was going。 。。。more

I like Grady Hendrix novels a lot and "How to Sell a Haunted House" has a strong opening and middle with estranged siblings, Louise and Mark, having to sort out their parent's estate after their unexpected death in a traffic accident。 Louise is an overachiever while Mark's biggest accomplishment is getting fired by every bar he's worked at。 The real problems start when they try to clean out the house, stuffed to the brim with their mom's doll and bad art collection。 When a murderous puppet from I like Grady Hendrix novels a lot and "How to Sell a Haunted House" has a strong opening and middle with estranged siblings, Louise and Mark, having to sort out their parent's estate after their unexpected death in a traffic accident。 Louise is an overachiever while Mark's biggest accomplishment is getting fired by every bar he's worked at。 The real problems start when they try to clean out the house, stuffed to the brim with their mom's doll and bad art collection。 When a murderous puppet from their childhood begins attacking them the two siblings have to work together to uncover the family secrets which caused the problems。The ending went on too long and was needlessly violent especially since the family secret didn't make much sense。 (How does a ghost travel 2000 miles to possess someone?)Still, the first 80% of the book is well worth the read。 Recommended。 。。。more

Ghosts? Supernatural? Demons? I love a good mystery or thriller but this was too much of a reach for me to believe。 This is my first read by this author。 I'll give him another chance because the writing was good but the plot didn't work for me。 Ghosts? New fear re-triggered - puppets! This story is creepy AF to listen to on audiobook I can only imagine how creepy it will be to make it into a movie and I have no doubt that it's probably being discussed because PUPPETS, that's all you need to know。Chucky and Annabelle have a new friend。。 New fear re-triggered - puppets! I really don’t get the people who enjoyed Grady Hendrix’s other books but hated this one。 I thought it was a solid book and I really connected to the main character。 I thought the puppet stuff was genuinely creepy albeit in a silly way, especially the section in the middle narrated by Mark

April Taylor

I absolutely loved this book and think it might be Hendrix’s best to date! I’m not usually scared by evil dolls, but the puppets in this book go far beyond the norm。 A truly fantastic book!

Miriam

Good synopsis that drew me in, but the execution in the book was not it。 I had higher hopes for this book。

Hendrix is good, as ever, at balancing reality and what may be supernatural and may not。 But the story is a little overlong and the protagonists, while superficially complicated, aren't exactly characters you root for with all your heart。 The evil puppet, however, is so loathsome you end up rooting for the protagonists by default。 Hendrix is good, as ever, at balancing reality and what may be supernatural and may not。 But the story is a little overlong and the protagonists, while superficially complicated, aren't exactly characters you root for with all your heart。 The evil puppet, however, is so loathsome you end up rooting for the protagonists by default。 。。。more

Brilliant book! Funny, scary and exciting, with a most satisfying end。 I highly recommend it。

This book was gripping from the beginning to end。 I love horror movies and this was my first horror book。 So I was skeptical but in the end I could not put the book down。 I really enjoyed the suspense and build up of how the dolls came to life。 It really showed the turmoil of Louise thinking this is not real and she has a mental disorder, but with her brother by her side confirming the reality of the situation she saw the truth。 Highly recommend。

Emma Seaton

I hate anything to do with creepy dolls/puppets and ventriloquist dummies but my god I loved this book。

Freaking Grady Hendrix。 😂I love his books because you're reading and things get really weird and you think, "Whoa, this is nuts。" And then you keep reading, and it gets more nuts。 And then you keep going, and everything is completely off-the-deep-end berserk! I compare him to Stephen King, but I love him more because there's amazing character work and lots of humor thrown in with the creepy。 This book easily does for dolls what IT does for clowns。 The main "villain" shall we say is absolutely EP Freaking Grady Hendrix。 😂I love his books because you're reading and things get really weird and you think, "Whoa, this is nuts。" And then you keep reading, and it gets more nuts。 And then you keep going, and everything is completely off-the-deep-end berserk! This is a strange little book, but I really enjoyed it。 It wasn’t exactly funny, but the strangeness of it made me think of Zombieland or Shaun of the Day。 There are creepy parts, but nothing I found scary。 I still have a lingering question (or five?)。 CW: The story largely revolves around the loss of parents and management of their funerals, burial, and their estate。

Megan

Why do I keep picking up Grady Hendrix books? I hated the characters, the body horror was gross, and the plot was riddled with holes。

Brianna

Who knew a horror book would have me crying in the club 🥹

Sue

Don’t be fooled by the title。 This is not a comedic fantasy or a cozy mystery。 It is a seriously creepy book that starts out strong, and then just gets creepier and dumber。 Not recommended。

I loved this book so much。 It was funny, heartwarming, heartbreaking and scary。 Even when I wasn't listening to the audiobook in my head I kept hearing Pupkin's voice lol。 Really my only negative was more a complaint about the audiobook in which the narrator said Luis more than Louise, as a Louise it really bothered me lol I loved this book so much。 It was funny, heartwarming, heartbreaking and scary。 Even when I wasn't listening to the audiobook in my head I kept hearing Pupkin's voice lol。 Really my only negative was more a complaint about the audiobook in which the narrator said Luis more than Louise, as a Louise it really bothered me lol 。。。more

this was absolutely ridiculous and quite disturbing

Wendy

DNFI made it through until things got weird with the puppets。 It turned from realistic to horror, and horror if not my genre。 Really wanted to give it a go, but just too creepy for my tastes。

Brynn Hunt

Too long with too much family drama。

Renae

Not my favorite Hendrix book, but still good and worth the read。
